WILLIAM R. EGNEW, an enterprising young farmer of Clay Township, was born in Spencer County, August 27, 1845. He is the fourth son of James H. and Mary (Richardson) Egnew, both natives of Kentucky. His father, when a young man, came to Spencer County, where he lived until his death, May 15, 1882. William received his early education in the district school, and began teaching at the age of nineteen. After teaching two terms, he entered the National Norman School at Lebanon, Ohio, where he completed the commercial course. He afterward taught four more terms of school. During the Rebellion he enlisted for the 100 days’ service in Company G, One Hundred and Thirty-six Indiana Volunteer Infantry, whose service consisted principally in guard duty. At the death of his father, he inherited the homestead farm of 120 acres on Section 38, where he still resides. In April, 1872, his marriage with Alice A. Ayer was celebrated. They have seven children: Lawrence, Joseph H., James S., Oliver P., Mary D., Anna and William B. Both Mr. Egnew and wife are members of the Baptist Church, and he is also a member of the I. O. O. F.
