VERMAZEN, ARCHIE, dealer in general merchandise, Charleston; born in Holland Jan. 25, 1844; came to Keokuk, Lee Co., in 1856; in the spring of 1862, went to Colorado, where he engaged in mercantile and hotel business for six years; returned to Lee Co., in 1868; bought a farm one mile northwest of Charleston, containing eighty acres, and, in November, 1875, engaged in his present business. Married Miss Emma Sapp in 1869; she was born in Clermont Co., Ohio, Nov. 27, 1850; came to Lee Co., with her parents, in 1858; they have two children — James H. and John A. Mr. V. has been Justice of the Peace six years, Township Clerk one term, and Assessor two terms. Mrs. V. is a member of the Baptist Church; Mr. V. is a Democrat.
