My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

CALEB RICE was born on the farm where he now resides, August 14, 1805, and was a son of Benjamin and Betsey (Tinsley) Rice. Benjamin Rice was born in Madison County, Va. He was brought up in Virginia, where he lived until after he was married, about 1781. A short time after he moved to Kentucky, settling first in Woodford County, and about 1790 settled on the tract of land now owned by Caleb Rice. He reared a family of nine children — six sons and three daughters. Caleb Rice is now the only surviving member of this family. He was brought up on the farm, and received his education in the common schools. He has followed farming and stock dealing all his life, and is now regarded as one of Kenton County’s most substantial farmers. At one time he owned upward of 700 acres of land, but has divided the same among his children, and now owns 185 acres of valuable land. He built his present residence, a beautiful two-story brick, in 1848. November 19, 1826, he married Mary House, a daughter of Jacob and Susan (Tanner) House, of Ohio, but natives of Virginia. To this union six children have been born — three sons and three daughters — viz.: Jacob, Thomas, Mary, William H., Caroline and Julia A. Mr. Rice is a Republican in politics.
