JOHN J. McCOLLUM is a native of Independence, Kenton Co., Ky., born October 26, 1842, and is a son of John and Mary (Stephens) McCollum, natives, respectively, of Kenton County, Ky., and Fairfax County, Va. The McCollums came from Maryland, and settled in Kenton County, Ky., over ninety years ago, and the Stephenses shortly after, both families settling near Independence. John McCollum died of cholera in 1849, aged fifty-six, and in 1852 John J. left the home farm, attended college in Ohio for awhile, then engaged in selling stock for five or more years. He next engaged in cigar-making, was then elected county clerk of his native county in 1882, and re-elected in August, 1886. In November, 1863, he married Anna Brown, a native of Kenton County, who has borne him one child, Charles. Mr. McCollum is a member of the I. O. O. F., and is a Knight of Honor.
