My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

THOMAS H. KENNEDY, a native of Kenton County, Ky., was born February 3, 1833, and is a son of Thomas D. and Nancy (Davis) Kennedy, natives of Covington and Pennsylvania, respectively. Joseph Kennedy, the paternal grandfather of our subject, was a native of Pennsylvania, and served in the war of 1812. His father came to Kentucky in 1776, and owned land upon which Covington is now situated. He built the first house in Covington in 1787 — a stone house on Garrard Street where it still stands; he was worth $75,000 in 1812. Thomas D. Kennedy, father of our subject, a civil engineer by profession, and a slave holder before the war, participated in the battle of the Thames, and died in 1869. Thomas H. Kennedy was reared on the farm three miles from Covington, and at the age of eighteen entered Centre College, at Danville, Ky., where he took a scientific course. On leaving college he removed to Covington, and studied civil engineering, in which business he has since been engaged. In January, 1886, he was elected city civil engineer of Covington. In 1871 he married Miss Mattie S. Baldwin, of Columbus, Ohio, and five children have been born to them, viz.: Lottie S., Joseph B., Thomas D., Grace B. and Francis Stewart. Mr. Kennedy is a member of the I. O. O. F., and votes with the Democrats.
