My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

P. P. MARTIN, an early settler and leading citizen of Ballard County, Ky., was born January 6, 1828, in Bedford County, Tenn., and is the third of six boys and three girls, born to Firney B. and Emily L. (Tankersly) Martin, natives of Logan County, Ky., and Alabama, respectively, and of Irish and English descent. The mother of our subject died in August, 1855, and his father married Miss Lavina A. Terry, daughter of Jesse Terry, of Henry County, Tenn., and had born by his second marriage one son and one daughter. The grandparents of our subject were John and Mary Martin; his mother was the daughter of John R. Tankersly, a farmer, who was a quartermaster in the war of 1812, with the rank of captain, and was engaged in the battle of New Orleans. The parents of Mr. Martin came to Graves County in the fall of 1828, and there his father entered and improved land for about ten years. They then moved to McCracken County, where they lived for two years on purchased land. In 1840, they moved to near Woodville, where the father purchased 300 acres of land which he partially improved. He lived there until his death in October, 1874, at the age of seventy-four years. He was the first sheriff of Ballard County. He also helped to put up the first log-house ever built in Paducah. P. P. Martin lived with his parents till he was twenty years old, when he engaged in farming for himself. He moved to where he now lives in North Ballard, in 1850, on 120 acres of land, which he improved and to which he has added till he now owns 270 acres in good condition. He commenced the study of medicine in 1869, and about 1875, commenced the practice, and has met with the best success. He was married January 7, 1849, to Nancy J. Crice, of Ballard County, a daughter of John and Ellen (McCrary) Crice, natives of Pennsylvania and North Carolina, respectively, and of Dutch and Scotch-Irish origin. He had born to him by this union twelve children: John O., Thomas (deceased), Emily E. (now Hall), Furna B. (deceased), Virginia A. (now McKinney), Mary, Martha, Carrie (deceased), Sammie, Charles E., Wallace and James. Dr. Martin is a Freemason.
