Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN R. McGEHEE, Fulton County, was born October 28, 1824, in Meade County, Ky., where he grew to manhood and in 1843 removed to Fulton County, and settled on the place where he died April 1, 1885. His father, Addison B. McGehee, a native of Louisa County, Va., was born in 1800, removed with his parents to Meade County, Ky., in 1804, and died in 1844. He was the son of William L. of Virginia, a soldier in the war of 1812. Addison B. married Elizabeth, daughter of John and Nancy (Wilhoit) Rush, of Buck Grove, Meade County (born in 1802, now living), to whom were born James M., subject, William B., Thomas W., Frances A. (Harper), Martha P. (Barnes), Mary L. (Milner) and Benjamin F. Subject was educated at Brandenburg Academy. He was married February 5, 1846, to Miss Lucretia S., daughter of Joseph and Mildred (Schouse) Roper, of Fulton County (born in 1828, and died November 11, 1855), and this union resulted in the birth of Joseph A. (deceased), Ophelia E., John R. (deceased), Anna B. (deceased), and Ida L. (deceased). He was next married August 17, 1856, to Miss T. Jane McFadden, of Fulton County (born 1829, and died in 1871), and from this union sprang John R. and Mattie Blanche. On September 10, 1872, subject was married to Miss Matilda, daughter of Charles and Sophia (Beckett) Middleton, of Virginia, and to them have been born Gypsie Lena, Sophia Maud, Pearl Garth, Arthur Charles Rush, Mary Louise and Constance Middleton. Mr. McGehee was at one time circuit clerk and examiner and deputy clerk of Fulton County till his death. He was a farmer, owning 140 acres of first-class land, in fine condition. He was formerly an old line Whig.
