Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN W. ROGERS, Fulton County, was born December 22, 1840, in Weakley County, near Dresden, Tenn. His father, John Rogers, was a native of North Carolina, from which State he moved with his parents about the year 1813 or 1814. He was a farmer and died in Texas in 1852, aged fifty-seven years. The mother of subject, Patience (Tansel) Rogers, was born in North Carolina also, and departed this life in Texas in 1882, at the age of seventy-six years. They were the parents of eleven children, of whom subject is the tenth child and the youngest living. Subject spent his youth and early manhood at the old homestead, looking after his mother’s welfare, and remaining with her until twenty-eight years of age. In 1876 he came to Hickman, and, in partnership with A. M. DeBow, opened a general grocery store. He afterward bought his partner’s interest and is conducting the business at the present time. During the war between North and South he served in the Seventh Confederate Regiment, Texas Volunteer Infantry; he received a wound at the battle of Fort Donelson, which compelled him to remain out of active service for a period of two years. At the end of that time he again entered the army, joining Forrest’s cavalry, with which he served until the close of the war. He participated in the battles of Fort Pillow, Hurricane Creek, Harrisburg, Nashville, and a number of other engagements. At the close of the war, he went to Texas, where he remained until 1869, the date of his arrival at Hickman. He was married in 1871 to Miss Lou M., daughter of N. N. and Mary Cowgill. Mr. and Mrs. Rogers are the parents of four children, Alexine Tansel, Nannie, John Nathaniel and Louisa W. Mr. Rogers is an active member of the Masonic fraternity and K. of H. Mrs. Rogers belongs to the Episcopal Church of Hickman.
