Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

H. A. VANN was born in Graves County, Ky., October 19, 1846, and is the eldest of the two boys and one girl born to David and Sarah (Jackson) Vann, natives of Missouri and Kentucky respectively, and of Irish descent. His paternal grandfather was Gabriel Vann, and his maternal grandfather John Jackson. David Vann died in 1852, and subject lived on the home farm with his mother until October 26, 1865, when he married Nancy T. Morris, daughter of John and Maria (Innman) Morris, natives of North Carolina, and among the early settlers of Graves County. His only child is named Lavina E. After his marriage, Mr. Vann resided in the Wingo District for two years and then a year at Arlington. In 1879 he purchased forty-one acres of his present farm, where he has since resided. In October, 1863, he enlisted in the Twelfth Kentucky Mounted Infantry, Capt. John Lynn, W. W. Faulkner colonel commanding, and was at the battle of Talahatchee; was taken prisoner, and on his release came home in the spring of 1865 and engaged in farming. Mr. Vann is an Odd Fellow, was formerly a Granger, and has been school trustee, and he and wife are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
