My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

THOMAS J. ROBERTS was born August 10, 1835, in Weakley County, Tenn., where he resided until 1872, when he came to Moscow, Ky. His father, Richard Roberts, a native of Chesterfield County, Va., removed in youth with his parents to Weakley County, Tenn., and died in 1857, at the age of forty-nine years. He was the son of William Roberts. Richard married Jane, daughter of William F. Farmer, of Weakley County, Tenn., born in 1814, and from this union sprang Susan A. (Wheeler), subject, Caledonia P. (Lloyd), William F., Isabell (Winstead), James (deceased), Martha J. (Orr), and John R. Subject was married June 11, 1867, to Miss Alice G., daughter of Franklin G. and Susan (Clemons) Beadles of Weakley County, and born in 1848. To them have been born Richard S., Joseph T., Blanche E., Edward and Lura D. Mr. Roberts was engaged three years in clerking and then commenced merchandising in 1859, at Dukedom, Tenn., but closed his business in 1861 on account of the war, and during the period of strife, engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1869 he dealt in tobacco and cotton, then for a period of seven years was in the livestock business, and in 1872 removed to Moscow, Ky., where he carried on the business of general merchant and produce dealer until 1877, when he purchased and operated a flouring-mill until 1881. He is now, with his partner, under the firm title of Roberts & Worthe, constructing a custom and merchant mill, that bids fair to be not only profitable to the enterprising owners, but a valuable acquisition to the community. Subject is a member of the A. F. & A. M., and in politics is a Democrat.
