R. L. CHILDERS. Very prominent among the rising young men of Jasper county is the subject of this sketch. He was born Jan. 11, 1850, in Knoxville, Tenn., and reared near there on a farm until fourteen years of age. He then ran away and enlisted in the Seventh Tennessee Mounted Infantry and served nine months; then returned home and went to school at Walnut Grove Academy and Oak Dale until 1860. He then went to Kansas City and taught school near there for two years; next went to Vinton, in the Indian Territory, and herded cattle there and in Kansas. In 1872 he came to Jasper county, Mo., and taught school four years; then clerked three years in N. G. Waller’s store. He took charge of the Jasper post-office in June, 1880, and still holds that position, and his well earned reputation for fair and honest dealings has won him many friends.
