Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Van Riper & Rogers. This firm represents one of the important industries of Southwest Missouri, and are practical business men, devoting their whole attention to the foundry and machine work business. Charles Van Riper, the senior member of the firm, was born in Washington County, N. Y., May 3, 1826, and is a son of Jacob and Roxanna (Mitchell) Van Riper, natives respectively of New York City and Deerfield, Conn. Charles is the youngest of their eight children, and was reared in New York, where he learned the machinist’s trade, an occupation he has followed all his life. He located in Rock Island, Ill., in 1851, and resided there and in the vicinity for about six years. He then went to Brooklyn, Iowa, where he lived until 1877, when he came to Missouri. Mr. Van Riper was married in 1856 to Elizabeth Shaw, a native of Sullivan County, N. Y., and by her is the father of two children: Esther (Mrs. Rudey) and Agnes E. (Mrs. J. A. Rogers).
