John C. Herms, furniture dealer, Neosho, Mo., was born in Herkimer County, N. Y., March 27, 1842, and is a son of Joseph and Juliana (Kertsinger) Herms, who were of German birth. They were early residents of Racine, Wis., and there the father followed agricultural pursuits. When thirteen years of age John C. began working at the carpenter’s trade, and after serving the full apprenticeship worked as a journeyman in Chicago, New York City and New Orleans. He left the latter city for his Northern home in February, 1861, and in the autumn of that year enlisted in Company G, Second Wisconsin Cavalry. He was with this company in its campaigns in Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, being in Austin, in the latter State, when he was mustered out. During his service in the army he was very favorably impressed with southwest Missouri, and resolved to make that State his home. Accordingly he came in May, 1866, and here followed the occupations of contracting and building until 1872, at which time he commenced the furniture business. He carries a large and well-selected stock of goods, and is doing well financially. The business block which bears his name is one of the most attractive buildings in Neosho. Mr. Herms takes an active interest in every enterprise calculated to benefit the town and county, and may be said to be a representative citizen. Politically he supports the principles of the Republican party. In his religious views he is a Congregationalist. In 1866 he married Elizabeth L. Liginger, who was born in Milwaukee County, Wis., and by her has four children: Cora A., Anna G., Mary E. and Maggie G.
