William Pettegrew Tanner, farmer, was born near Glasgow, Barren Co., Ky., January 8, 1823, son of Frederick and Elizabeth (Pettegrew) Tanner, both of old Kentucky stock. William P., our subject, grew to manhood in his native State, and in the fall of 1864 went to Jasper County, Iowa, where he remained until 1867, then moved to Cherokee County, Kas., and in the spring of 1870 from there to Lawrence County, Mo. He was at Pea Ridge, Ark., two years, and in the fall of 1872 he came to Newton County, Mo., where he has since remained. While a resident of Kentucky he married Ascenith Bowles, who bore him ten children — four sons and two daughters living, and two sons and two daughters deceased. Those living are named as follows: William F., Thomas, James F., John Walter, Mary (wife of Greenberry Buxton) and Sarah Ann (wife of Milton F. Tanner). The children deceased are named as follows: Lucinda (who was over twenty years of age at the time of her death), Jesse P. (who died at the age of five years), Parthena and Francis Marion (who died at the age of about twenty-one). Mr. and Mrs. Tanner are members of the Baptist Church.
