Jonathan D. Whittenburg, farmer and stock raiser of Ozark Township, and one of the leading men of Webster County, is a native of Northern Georgia, and was born November 26, 1836, being the son of James and Sarah C. Whittenburg. The father was born in Tennessee in 1809, and now resides in Ozark Township, this county. In early life he removed from Tennessee to Georgia, and in 1857 the family immigrated to Missouri, settling on the Ozark, in Webster County. The mother, whose maiden name was Davis, was born in Tennessee in 1804, and died in Webster County, Mo., in 1878. Jonathan D. Whittenburg was reared on his father’s farm, and was a pupil in the country schools. He began farming for himself at the age of twenty-four years, and is now the owner of 200 acres of good land, all well improved. He is the inventor of “Whittenburg’s Safety Flood Fence,” which was patented September 22, 1885, and which is one of the best fences of the kind ever placed on the market. Mr. Whittenburg was married in 1860 to Miss Mary J. Kilburn, who was born in Lawrence County, Tenn., in 1839, and who is the daughter of Allen and Millie (Watkins) Kilburn. Mr. and Mrs. Whittenburg are the parents of four children: Thomas, born in 1861; Martha, born in 1866; Margaret, born in 1867, and Dickey, born in 1875. Mr. Whittenburg is a Democrat in politics, and he and Mrs. Whittenburg are leading and much esteemed members of the Christian Church.
