Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Crockett County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1886.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Dr. D. A. Walker was born in Dyer County, Tenn., February 1, 1856, being one of six children born to G. W. and Mary J. Walker. The former was born near Nashville, Tenn., July 12, 1816, and moved to Dyer County about 1848. He is a farmer, and now resides about eight miles east of Dyersburg. His wife, whose maiden name was Parish, was born December 19, 1831. Dr. D. A. Walker received the most of his education in Friendship, and was salesman for J. D. Smith & Son, for one year. He began the study of medicine in 1877, and in October, 1878, entered the medical department of the Vanderbilt University, and graduated in February, 1880, but in the meantime had practiced medicine about five months at Alamo. After graduating he located at that place, where he remained until the 14th of the following August, when he was obliged to give up his practice on account of osseous aneurism in the head of the left tibia, which necessitated the amputation of the limb. He soon located at Friendship, where he resumed practice. March 9, 1880, he married Lucy Biggs, daughter of the late W. W. Biggs; she was born in Friendship, July 12, 1858, and departed this life December 5, 1884. June 2, 1886, he married Ola A., daughter of the late Thomas Ward. Mrs. Walker was born near Friendship, March 4, 1860. The Doctor commands a large practice, and is very successful in his treatment of all diseases peculiar to the locality. He is a Democrat, a member of the State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association.
