James Price was born in Fayette County, Tenn., May 22, 1839, and is a son of Henry M. and Mahala (Norman) Price. The father was a native of South Carolina, born July 4, 1804, and died in Fayette County, June 19, 1880. The mother was born in Rutherford County, Tenn., in 1799 and died in Fayette County in February, 1886. Our subject is of German-Irish descent. The parents were married in Mississippi in 1827, and spent two years in that State. In 1829 they settled in Fayette County, seven miles south from Somerville, where they lived until they died. The father was always a farmer, and both parents were consistent members of the Primitive Baptist Church, the father having served as deacon for thirty years. Our subject was the seventh of ten children; after finishing his education he turned his attention to farming, and in 1868 came into possession of a farm in the Eleventh District and moved to it in 1870; eight years later he moved to the place where he now lives, which he purchased in 1880. He now owns 420 acres of good land in Fayette County, which he has secured through his own energy and good management. December 16, 1868, he married Miss Sarah F. Stidham, born in Fayette County October 2, 1843. She is a lady of marked intelligence and culture. Three daughters were born to this marriage, two dead; they were as follows: Zula C., born October 14, 1871, and died February 19, 1872; Lela V., born July 12, 1875, and Lula O., born October 13, 1879, and died June 15, 1880. Mr. Price is a Democrat; he is by preference a Primitive Baptist, though he has never united with any church. He farms with system and judgment, and is regarded as one of the reliable, progressive citizens of the county.
