Harry Alonzo Longabaugh "Sundance Kid" and Etta Place, The Wild Bunch Gang, historic photo

An historic photo of Harry Alonzo Longabaugh, better known as "The Sundance Kid", and his companion Etta Place. The Wild Bunch Gang, composed of Harry Longabaugh ("The Sundance Kid"), Robert LeRoy Parker ("Butch Cassidy"), Harvey Logan ("Kid Curry") and several other lesser known members were infamous for a lengthy string of bank and train robberies in the American western states during the 1890's. It is said that the Wild Bunch Gang committed more successful train robberies than any other group. As the result of their exploits, they were heavily pursued by the Pinkerton Detective Agency which finally caused "The Sundance Kid" and "Butch Cassidy" along with Etta Place to leave the United States for Argentina on February 20, 1901. On November 7, 1908, "The Sundance Kid" and "Butch Cassidy" were surrounded by local authorities and killed near San Vicente, Bolivia.

The historic photo shown here of Harry Longabaugh, "The Sundance Kid", and Etta Place was taken in New York, just before they sailed to Argentina on February 20, 1901. Little is known about Etta Place. Even her real name and identity is uncertain. No evidence has ever been found to conclusively prove who she really was and of when and where she died.

The 1969 movie, Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid starring Paul Newman as "Butch Cassidy", Robert Redford as "The Sundance Kid", and Katharine Ross as Etta Place is very loosely based on the story of the real life outlaws.
