Daniel and Rebecca Boone, Final Grave and Tombstone, Frankfort, Kentucky, photos

Daniel and Rebecca Boone, Final Grave and Tombstone, Frankfort, Kentucky, photo.

The grave and tombstone marking the final resting place of Daniel and Rebecca Boone. The Boone family relocated from Kentucky in 1799 to a remote location in what is now St. Charles County, Missouri. The area was then under Spanish control and Boone served the Spanish government as a syndic which made him the law and judge of all legal matters in the region. His son, Nathan Boone, built a substantial home of stone at this location which served as a home to Nathan Boone and his family and also as home to Nathan and Rebecca Boone during their final years. In 1813, Rebecca Boone died and was buried in a small cemetery near modern day Marthasville, Missouri. At that time, the Missouri River flowed next to the cemetery but has since been re-routed some distance a way. In 1820, Daniel Boone also died and he was buried by Rebecca. Both were buried in unmarked graves which was often the case in remote areas of the wilderness.

In 1845, the State of Kentucky received permission from two of Boone's granddaughters to remove the bodies to Frankfort, Kentucky. Since the original burials were in unmarked graves and since the granddaughters were young at the time of their burials, there was less than absolute certainty as to the precise location of the graves. What was reasonably believed to be the remains of Daniel and Rebecca Boone were transported to the Frankfort Cemetery which sits on a high bluff with a grave site overlooking the Kentucky State Capitol on the opposite side of the Kentucky River.
