New York City, New York, Cornelius Vanderbilt II Home, 1901, historic photo

An historic photo view of the mansion home of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, New York City, New York which was located on Fifth Avenue at the southwest corner of 58th Street. Cornelius Vanderbilt II was the oldest grandson of "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt. The six story plus basement mansion filled the entire block and has the distinction of being the largest private residence ever built in New York City. Built in 1883, the home was demolished and replaced by the Bergdorf Goodman department store in 1928.

As extravagant as this mansion was, it was greatly surpassed by the Biltmore House built by George Washington Vanderbilt II, the younger brother of Cornelius Vanderbilt II. View photo here: Biltmore House Estate, Asheville, North Carolina.

This historic photo was published by the Detroit Publishing Co., 1901.
