An historic postcard view of the Federal Prison on Alcatraz Island, San Francisco Bay, California. Alcatraz operated as a federal prison from 1934 to 1963. The Alcatraz facility ceased to operate as a federal prison on March 21, 1963. The entire island was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1986 and is now managed by the National Park Service. Alcatraz Island is about 1.5 miles from the San Francisco shore and is open to the public for tours. A ferry service provides transportation to the island. See the additional view below.
