James Monroe was born April 28, 1758 at Monroe Hall, Westmoreland County, Virginia. Monroe served two terms as the fifth President of the United States from 1817 to 1825. Monroe is the last of the founding fathers to serve as president and also the last president to have served in combat during the Revolutionary War. At the Battle of Trenton, Monroe was struck by a musket ball in the shoulder that severed an artery which came close to causing him to bleed to death. After the war and before serving as President, Monroe served in a wide variety of offices including as a member of the Congress of the Confederation 1783-1786; United States Senator 1790-1794; Minister to France 1794 to 1796; 12th Governor of Virginia 1799-1802; Minister to United Kingdom 1803-1808; 16th Governor of Virginia 1811; Secretary of State 1811-1817; Secretary of War 1814-1815. President James Monroe died July 4, 1831 in New York City, aged 73. After his death, Monroe was buried Marble Cemetery in New York City. In 1858, his remains were transferred to the tomb pictured on this postcard in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia. President John Tyler (served 1841-1845) is also buried in this same cemetery.
