After the war and before serving as President, Monroe served in a wide variety of offices including as a member of the Congress of the Confederation 1783-1786; United States Senator 1790-1794; Minister to France 1794 to 1796; 12th Governor of Virginia 1799-1802; Minister to United Kingdom 1803-1808; 16th Governor of Virginia 1811; Secretary of State 1811-1817; Secretary of War 1814-1815. President James Monroe died July 4, 1831 in New York City, aged 73. After his death, Monroe was buried Marble Cemetery in New York City. In 1858, his remains were transferred to the tomb pictured on this postcard in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia. President John Tyler (served 1841-1845) is also buried in this same cemetery.
