Abraham Lincoln, 1858, historic photo, by Calvin Jackson

An historic photo of Abraham Lincoln, taken by photographer Calvin Jackson on October 1, 1858 in Pittsfield, Illinois.

Between August 21, 1858 and October 15, 1858 a series of seven debates were held across the state of Illinois between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas during the election campaign for the Senate. The debates drew very large crowds and widespread national attention. The photo shown here was taken just two weeks before the final debate of October 15, 1858. In the end, Lincoln lost the race for the senate seat but just two years later, in 1860, he became the Republican candidate for president and won the election. It was during the 1860 presidential election campaign that Lincoln grew his well known beard.

Abraham Lincoln, born February 12, 1809 at Hodgenville, Kentucky; died April 15, 1865 at Washington, D. C.; age 56.
