The tombstone and grave of Richard Lord Jones, Fairview Cemetery, New Albany, Indiana. Jones was one of the youngest soldiers who participated in the American Revolutionary War. At the age of ten, Jones enlisted on June 20, 1777 in Captain James Watson's Company of the Third Connecticut Regiment commanded by Colonel Samuel B. Webb. He served as a fifer and was a participant in each of the marches and engagements of his unit during his three year term of service which ended on June 20, 1780. During his term of service he met both George and Martha Washington and the French General Lafayette.

Richard Lord Jones was born May 15, 1767, Colchester, Connecticut, the son of Amasa Jones (1749-1826) and Hope Lord (1753-1798). After the war he was engaged in the cotton manufacturing business in Connecticut. In 1818, he settled in Gallipolis, Ohio. Later he moved to a farm near New Albany, Indiana where he died, July 23, 1852 at the age of 85. He is buried in Fairview Cemetery, New Albany, Indiana. Jones married twice (Hannah Hooker and Elizabeth Clark) and was the father of seven children: five daughters and two sons.

During the Revolutionary war, the minimum age at enlistment was 16 years old, or 15 with parental consent. Some exceptions were made for musicians who served as fifers or drummers. Most soldiers in the Revolutionary War were rather young; one study has shown that the average age of the soldiers in Washington's army in 1777 was between 20 and 25. Many of course were older with enlistments occurring up to age 55.
