A photo of the tombstone and grave of Samuel Adams, an important founding father during the American Revolution. Samuel Adams was born on September 27 (old style September 16), 1722 in Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony. During the course of his life, he served as President of the Massachusetts Senate; the fourth governor of Massachusetts; a delegate to the Continental Congress; and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Adams is also believed to be one of the central figures behind the Boston Tea Party. It was Samuel Adams and John Hancock that Paul Revere rode furiously to Lexington, Massachusetts to warn of the approach of the British troops. Samuel Adams was a second cousin to President John Adams, whom he often was in disagreement politically.

Samuel Adams died on October 2, 1803 at Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was 81 years old. At the time of his death, the Boston newspaper, Independent Chronicle, hailed Adams as the "Father of the American Revolution." The remains of Samuel Adams are buried in the historic Old Granary Burying Ground in Boston, Massachusetts.
