Washington, D. C., Ford's Theatre, Site of Lincoln Assassination, 1865, Historic Photo

A historic photo view of Ford's Theatre, the site of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865. This was a popular place of entertainment at the time; Lincoln had eight times attended performances at the theatre between 1863 and 1865. After being shot, Lincoln was taken across the street to the Petersen House where he died about nine hours later on April 15, 1865.

After the assassination of Lincoln, military guards were placed around the building to prevent entry. Several of those guards can be seen in this photo, taken between April and July, 1865. See another view of Ford's Theatre below.

Ford's Theatre is located at 511 Tenth Street, NW Washington, D. C., and has been restored to its appearance on the evening of the assassination. The building is now open to the public for the purpose of education concerning the life, presidency, and assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
